Century Old Sewage Plant Replaced By Modern Membrane Bioreactor Treatment Process

May 23, 2017

The small community of Valeria in Town of Cortlandt, NY is experiencing substantial population growth as Toll Brothers, Inc. builds a high quality development in its midst. Milnes Engineering and Construction is providing planning, permitting, design and build services to replace the old plant to accommodate the increased wastewater flows (up to 56.000 gallons per day) and meet the much more stringent SPDES effluent limits established by the New York State DEC.

The existing century old plant consisted of primary clarification, trickling biological filters, secondary clarification, open intermittent sand filters, and disinfection with sodium hypochlorite. The new treatment plant consists of the (existing) primary clarifier, equalization, fine screening, anoxic/aerobic/membrane biological process, aerobic sludge digestion, and ultraviolet disinfection. Membrane technology has advanced in recent years such that capital and operating costs are very competitive with other more conventional technologies while ensuring very high effluent quality.

Actual demolition of portions of the old plant and construction of the new began in May 2017 and will continue to completion and startup late this year. Progress updates will be provided in subsequent posts.
